Custom Cabinets vs. Stock Cabinets: Cost and Quality Compared

By S and J Contracting · Gray, TN · Serving the Tri-Cities

The cabinet decision is the biggest single choice in most kitchen remodels. Stock, semi-custom, or fully custom — each has a real cost range and real tradeoffs. Here's the honest breakdown.

Stock Cabinets

Stock cabinets are pre-built in fixed sizes and finishes, available off the shelf at home improvement stores. The good: they're immediately available and relatively inexpensive. The bad: limited sizes (typically in 3" increments), limited finish options, and construction quality that varies widely.

Cost range: $3,000–$8,000 for a typical 10x10 kitchen. These are real-world numbers, not list prices.

Construction: Typically 5/8" particle board boxes with thermofoil or vinyl wrap doors. Higher-end stock lines use plywood boxes and real wood doors — worth the premium.

Best for: Tight budgets, rental properties, secondary kitchens, or situations where the layout fits standard cabinet dimensions without awkward fillers.

Semi-Custom Cabinets

Semi-custom cabinets are ordered from a manufacturer in a much wider range of sizes (often in 1" increments), with significantly more door style, wood species, and finish options. They're built to order but use standardized components.

Cost range: $8,000–$20,000 for a typical kitchen, depending on line and features.

Construction: Better semi-custom lines use 3/4" plywood boxes, dovetail drawer construction, and soft-close hardware as standard. This is a meaningfully better product than stock.

Best for: Most kitchen remodels where you want a quality product at a reasonable price point. This is the sweet spot for most Tri-Cities homeowners.

Lead time: 4–8 weeks from order to delivery.

Custom Cabinets

Custom cabinets are built from scratch to your exact specifications — any size, any wood species, any finish, any interior configuration. There are no standard dimensions, no catalog limitations.

Cost range: $20,000–$60,000+ for a typical kitchen. The range is enormous because custom means exactly that — a painted maple cabinet with standard hardware is a different project than walnut with inset doors and hand-forged hardware.

Construction: At the high end, solid wood face frames, plywood boxes, dove-tail drawers, and hand-finished surfaces. Built to last generations.

Best for: Unusual kitchen dimensions, high-end finishes, homeowners who plan to be in their house for 20+ years and want the best.

Lead time: 8–16 weeks from design approval to delivery.

The Honest Recommendation

For most Tri-Cities kitchen remodels, quality semi-custom cabinets hit the right balance. You get size flexibility, real plywood construction, soft-close hardware, and a wide range of aesthetic choices — at a price that makes sense for the market. Unless you have a genuinely unusual kitchen or a specific design vision that requires custom work, semi-custom is the right call.
