Frequently Asked
Questions

Everything homeowners ask before hiring a remodeling contractor. We answer all of it — honestly.

Getting a Quote

Is the estimate really free?

Yes. We come to your home, walk the space, talk through your vision, and give you a written all-inclusive quote — all at no cost. No pressure, no follow-up harassment.

How fast can I get an estimate?

Usually within 1–2 business days of your call. We schedule around your availability.

What should I have ready for the estimate visit?

Ideas and inspiration help (Pinterest boards, magazine photos), but you don't need anything prepared. We'll ask the right questions. If you know your budget range, sharing it helps us give you the most useful recommendation.

How long until I get the written quote?

Within 48 hours of the estimate visit.

Pricing & Contracts

Is your quote really all-inclusive?

Yes. Every line is spelled out — demo, materials, labor, permits, disposal, and finish work. The number on the quote is the number you pay. If something unexpected comes up mid-project, we talk about it before we touch it, and you approve any change in writing.

How does payment work?

A deposit is collected at contract signing to cover initial materials and permit costs. The balance is due at final walkthrough after your sign-off — not before.

Do you require a signed contract?

Always. Every project has a written contract with scope, timeline, payment terms, and warranty. No handshake deals.

Can I phase the project to spread the cost?

Sometimes. We'll discuss what makes sense for your specific project during the estimate.

The Build Process

Do I need to move out during the remodel?

In most cases, no. We work in a contained area, protect adjacent spaces, and clean up daily. For very large whole-home renovations, we'll discuss options upfront.

Do you handle permits?

Yes. We pull all required permits, schedule inspections, and handle all paperwork. You don't need to do anything on the permit front.

How do you handle unexpected discoveries (like hidden plumbing issues)?

We stop, show you what we found, explain the options and costs, and wait for your approval before proceeding. You're never surprised by a bill for work you didn't authorize.

How often will I hear from you during the build?

At minimum, once a week — either a phone call or written update. For active build phases, your project lead is reachable by phone during work hours.

After the Project

What does the warranty cover?

Our written workmanship warranty covers installation defects. If something fails because of how it was built, we come back and fix it. Manufacturer warranties on materials are passed through.

What if I notice something after the final walkthrough?

Call us. We stand behind our work. One call and we handle it — no runaround.

Do you do small repairs after a project is done?

Within the warranty scope, yes. For new small projects unrelated to your remodel, we'll assess case by case.

Working With S&J

What insurance do you carry?

General liability and workers' compensation insurance on every job. We're happy to share certificates with homeowners before contract signing.

Do you use subcontractors?

For specialty trades like electrical and plumbing, we work with vetted local licensed tradespeople. Our core crew handles demo, carpentry, tile, cabinetry, and finish work directly.

How far do you travel for projects?

Our service area covers all of Tri-Cities Tennessee — Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, Elizabethton, Jonesborough, Greeneville, Erwin, Bluff City, and Piney Flats. Generally within about 45 minutes of our Gray, TN base.

Do you do commercial projects?

Our primary focus is residential. Small commercial light-build projects are considered on a case-by-case basis — call us and we'll tell you honestly if it's a fit.
