Trim style guide: Colonial vs Craftsman vs Contemporary vs Victorian

The trim profile carries more of a home's character than almost any other finish element. Match the period and the room reads "intentional" — mismatch it and it reads "renovation."

Style Profile Best for home style Cost
Colonial Ogee casing, fluted, returned ends Federal, Colonial Revival, traditional $400 – $900 / room
Craftsman Flat 1×4–1×6 boards, square sticks Bungalow, Arts & Crafts, modern farmhouse $500 – $1,100 / room
Contemporary Flat, minimal, clean painted lines Mid-century, modern, transitional $400 – $900 / room
Victorian Heavy crown, rosettes, picture rail Victorian, Queen Anne, ornate restorations $800 – $1,800 / room

Costs are per-room averages for trim package installs — crown molding, baseboards, and door casing combined. Single-element installs (just crown, just baseboards) come in lower.

Finish Carpentry FAQs

How much does crown molding cost per room?

For a typical 12×12 room, crown molding runs $400–$900 depending on profile complexity and ceiling height. Older homes with uneven ceiling lines take longer (more scribing) and trend toward the higher end.

Can you match trim in an older home with custom profiles?

Yes — for homes built before 1970, we often see profiles that aren't stocked anywhere anymore. We can custom-mill matching profiles or use combinations of stock pieces that read identical from a normal viewing distance.

What's the difference between paint-grade and stain-grade trim?

Paint-grade is usually MDF or finger-jointed pine — smooth, takes paint well, costs less. Stain-grade is solid wood (oak, poplar, maple, cherry) so the grain shows through. For painted trim you save 30–40% with paint-grade; for stained or natural finish you need stain-grade.

How long does it take to install built-ins?

A single built-in (bookcase, window seat, mudroom locker) typically runs 3–7 working days on-site, plus another week or two of shop time if pieces are pre-built. Whole-room custom built-ins like an entertainment wall can run 2 weeks total.

Do you do interior door replacement with new casing?

Yes — pre-hung door + new casing is one of the most cost-effective trim upgrades. Most replacements run $400–$800 per door including supply and install. Typically 2–4 hours per door if the rough opening is square.
