Kitchen Remodel Timeline: What to Expect Start to Finish
By S and J Contracting · Gray, TN · Serving the Tri-Cities
One of the first questions homeowners ask us is: how long will this take? The honest answer depends on project scope — but the bigger issue is that most contractors are vague about timelines because they don't want to commit to one. We do. Here's what a real kitchen remodel timeline looks like, from first call to finished project.
The Pre-Construction Phase: 1–4 Weeks Before Demo
Week 0: On-site estimate. We come to your home, measure the kitchen, talk through your goals, and look at the existing conditions. This visit takes 60–90 minutes and gives us what we need to build an accurate quote.
48 hours later: Written quote. You receive a fully itemized quote with every line spelled out. You review it, ask questions, and either approve or ask for modifications.
After approval: Permits and materials. We pull the necessary permits (typically 1–3 weeks for Washington, Sullivan, and Carter County), and order cabinets. This is the long lead-time item — stock and semi-stock cabinets take 2–6 weeks. Custom cabinets can take 8–14 weeks. We schedule your start date based on when materials arrive.
Construction Phase: Week-by-Week
Day 1–2: Demo. Existing cabinets, countertops, flooring, and fixtures come out. This is the loudest and messiest part of the project. We protect adjacent rooms with temporary barriers and haul out debris daily.
Day 3–5: Rough-in work. Any plumbing moves, electrical updates, or structural modifications happen now — while walls are open. This is when surprises, if there are any, get discovered. We communicate immediately and get your approval before proceeding with anything outside the original scope.
Day 6–12: Cabinet installation. Cabinets go in after rough-in is complete and inspected. This typically takes 2–4 days for a typical kitchen layout. Uppers first, then lowers, then crown molding and trim details.
Day 13–15: Countertop templating and installation. Stone countertops (quartz, granite) require a template made after cabinets are set — then fabrication takes 7–14 days. This is often a sequencing decision: if you want to minimize overall timeline, some homeowners elect laminate or butcher block that can be installed immediately while stone is being fabricated.
Day 16–18: Backsplash, plumbing fixtures, and electrical trim-out. Tile backsplash, faucets, disposal, lighting, and outlets go in now that counters are set.
Day 19–21: Flooring (if applicable), final details, punch list. If we're installing new kitchen flooring as part of this project, it typically goes in last. Final caulking, touch-up painting, hardware installation, and appliance hookups complete the project.
Final walkthrough. We walk through the kitchen together. Any items on the punch list are resolved before we call it done.
Total Timeline: What to Expect
- Minor refresh: 1–2 weeks of construction
- Mid-range remodel (stock/semi-stock cabinets): 3–5 weeks of construction
- Full remodel with custom cabinets: 6–10 weeks of construction
- Full remodel with layout changes: 8–12 weeks of construction
These are construction timelines. Add the pre-construction phase (estimate, quote, permits, material lead time) and you're looking at 6–16 weeks from first call to finished kitchen for a typical project.
Living Without a Kitchen: Practical Advice
Most homeowners are surprised by how manageable this is. Set up a temporary kitchen station in your dining room or living room with a microwave, toaster oven, and coffee maker. Paper plates and plastic silverware become your friends. Many Tri-Cities families use this as an excuse to explore local restaurants — not the worst silver lining.
If the project is part of a larger renovation, we can sometimes sequence the work to minimize the time your kitchen is completely non-functional.
